“The beach left an impression in my skin - the heat, the crowd, the water…I let the exposure be a little brighter than I would normally because its how the lake seemed through my eyes…blinding light and burning sand and [smooth] water.”Anna Peters

This month, Cerulean Collective is featuring many artists and creative individuals who express themselves through photography, music, and writing.

Our first interview on Cerulean Collective is Anna Peters, a 20 year old photographer out of Washington. Her willingness to explore and shoot film are marveling. Her photographs say a lot of what she does, and where she goes, so we decided to get to know Anna a little bit.

What inspires you take photographs?

AP: I suppose when I boil it down, I am inspired by light. Without light, obviously life would be impossible. Its the lens through which we all are able to interact with the world. My work is a direct response to the way I see light fall on the people, places, and things surrounding me. I am in love with the way that sunshine meets shadow.

If you could travel anywhere this moment, where would you go?

AP: The vast landscapes of Russia for winter white.

Are you doing anything this holiday season?

AP: I’m going home! I go to college quite a ways away from my hometown, so spending time with my family is always wonderful.

How often do you carry around a camera with you?

AP: At school, running from class to class, not very often. At home, at least one stays in my bag at all times. When I’m traveling, several, in my hands, 100% of the time.

Favourite Christmas song at the moment?

AP: Mmmmm, this version of Just Like Christmas, by Low.

You’re an amazing young photographer who primarily uses film to take photographs. Film and film developing can be costly, so why chose analog photography over digital?

AP: Film is tangible. I like the act of loading and shooting a roll, knowing that the physical evidence of my work is in the small plastic strips. I like the limitations of 24 frames, knowing each one counts, that each picture requires care and focus. I like the uncertainty, the possibly for failure, that you’ll botch your roll, because it makes the perfect shots that much more beautiful. And…. as anyone who walks out of a store with a freshly developed set of negatives just waiting to be unveiled knows….I think shooting film might be legitimately addicting. Some scientists should look into that.
